Episode 3

We’re on the road, still. I wish I was walking alone out at the front of the group like Min, or far behind like Niya, but no, I’m stuck in the middle with Lozen, the lead-footed Henri Nevereaux, and the endlessly good-humored droning of our prisoner, Eckhart Lang. Wolfram tied the bounty hunter’s wrists, and he’s keeping a tight grip on the rope, but Lang doesn’t seem to notice or care that he’s being led like an animal to slaughter.

“…but the last time I was in Maer Gallyons, I stayed at the Azure Arms,” Lang is saying, “and I can assure you, the thread counts on those sheets were three times higher than anything I slept on in Tenjia. They may have all the finest things in the east, but only in the west can you get those things taken to their most unreasonably indulgent extremes.”

“I do like the Azure Arms.” Henri sighs loudly. “I wish I was there now.”

“Of course, where Gallians truly excel is in their cuisine,” Lang continues. “Not in their uses of spices or exotic ingredients, of course, which they never touch, but Gallian chefs are renowned for their exceptional attention to superficial details and elegant plating. Though I think the sauces alone are reason enough to make the gastronomical pilgrimage.”

“Lang?” I glance at him.

“Yes, darling?”

“Shut up.” I look away again. “No amount of talk is going to make anyone here sympathize with you. You’re not clever. You’re not charming. You kill people.”

“I kill dangerous people,” he admits. “Not unlike yourself.”

“You kill civilians.”

“I kill civilians who can control dragons, the most dangerous weapons in the known world,” he clarifies. “Don’t try to confuse the issue, sweetheart. The Drogori are practically living weapons themselves. But then, I wouldn’t expect someone in your position to judge them too harshly.”

Lozen frowns at me. “What’s he talking about?”

“His Drogori compass.” I show her the small device. “The needle is still pointing at me. Even when we were in a house full of Drogori, the needle still pointed to me instead of them.”

Lozen shrugs. “Who cares? I don’t see any scales or horns on you, and the last dragon we saw tried to kill you, twice, so I’m pretty sure you’re no Drogori.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence.”

“Still,” Lozen continues, “if we never find any unicorns or Alcani riders, then it wouldn’t hurt to have a dragon master in our corner when the Dragon Solstice kicks off.”

We carry on down the westward road a short while longer before we see that Amina has stopped at the crest of a hill and is staring at something on the far side.

“Min?” I call out. “What is it?”

“Trouble.” The little elf looks back at us with worried eyes. “Big trouble.”

The rest of us reach the top of the hill and look down on the vast fields and woods that stretch to the low plain by the sea where the gleaming white city of Maer Gallyons stands by the sparkling waves crashing on the black rocks.
